Do you know the origins of our school badge, who designed it and what the various symbols represent?

Well neither did I so I did a bit of research. While I couldn’t find any official detailed explanation of each symbol online, I can offer an informed interpretation based on typical heraldic and Catholic symbolism, plus the context of Holy Rood RC High School in Edinburgh

The badge is quartered (divided into four parts) and usees the school’s colours—purple (a liturgical colour of penance or royalty), grey, and white. Each quadrant contains a symbol likely rich in Catholic or local significance:

  1. Top Left: A stylised cross—representing the Holy Cross, known in Latin as Rood. This visually emphasise the school’s name and faith foundation.

  2. Top Right: A ship—commonly used in Christian imagery to symbolise the Church, navigating through the storms of life with Christ as our guide (the “barque of Peter”). It is not unlike the ship depicted in the old Leith coat of arms carrying the Virgin and Child with a storm cloud above.

  3. Bottom Left: Two stars and a crescent—these motifs often appear in Marian iconography, where stars can represent Mary as the “Star of the Sea” and the crescent hints at her Immaculate Conception. It could signal devotion to the Virgin Mary, common in Catholic tradition.

  4. Bottom Right: A Tau cross (T-shaped)—associated with St. Francis of Assisi and early Christian symbolism.  The Hospital Brothers of St. Anthony, known as the Antonines, were a Catholic religious order of the Latin Church founded at the end of the 11th century. They wore a black religious habit marked with a blue tau. It is also a universal symbol of the cross and Christian faith.

Below the shield, the motto Spes Nostra reinforces the idea of hope rooted in faith.

To get an authoritative breakdown, I’d recommend contacting the school directly—they may have published materials or archive notes from when the badge was designed. Perhaps a school handbook, crest explanation, or alumni publication could illuminate the precise intentions behind each symbol.
